Dear Wellness Seekers,

Ambiance, Artistic Treasures, Appetizing Food Defines Crystal Bridges Museum for Spanista. To get there, one drives on Missouri and Arkansas State Highways through rolling hills framed by layers of natural slate stone. Enjoying the relaxing countryside of gloriously colored foliage at the peak of Autumn, we eventually arrive in small town America – Bentonville, Arkansas. Famous as the home of Wal-Mart, Inc. and now boasts the home of its new gem – Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, it is truly a memorable experience that is one of a kind. If you viewed my previous posts this week you will know the back story on Crystal Bridges, if not you may enjoy taking a moment to check it out.

Today I share my final post on Crystal Bridges Museum which will focus on the oldest of the beautiful treasures created by American Artists that many of you may recognize. To complement this exploration you  see a great casual luncheon experience with just the right glass of J Vineyard wine (yes, they had it!) to further warm my heart. The restaurant was called ‘Eleven’ but why named so I am yet to uncover. The ambiance was airy, comfortable and refined. The menu delightful with just enough creative cuisine selections to appeal to even the pickiest urbanite.

The next Gallery Wing we visited after lunch was a walk back in time, with an eclectic collection of  cherished American Artists of the era. Here are the highlights:

As we strolled through the gallery rooms, one could feel the physical effects of the art personally. Soothing, enriching and humbling. As I observed others I could see the awestruck looks on the faces of many as the sheer wonder of our America depicted through the eyes and hands of these talented people. I made a mental note to do some research about the Effects of Art on Humanity.  I wondered: Can the arts have a positive effect on health? I discovered a special study sponsored by The London Arts Council.org.uk – “Arts Have a Positive Effect On Health: A Review of Medical Literature by Dr. Rosalia Lelchuk Staricoff.” Here is just one of many medical findings that indicate a positive outcome:

  • Encouraging people to attend cultural events has been shown to have a positive effect on blood pressure and hormone levels (Konlaan, 2000)

Spanista Takeaway: This one health benefit alone is eye-opening to me. Perhaps the reason we are driven to create Art goes further than Self Expression – beyond Self Care – to actually to offer Care for others too? Interesting thought Spanista Reflection.  As the holidays come upon us, create a new Spanista Ritual. Take time with your loved ones to visit an Art Center of your choice. They are festive places this time of years draped in holiday dressings and have special events worth checking out. It will open your heart with emotional to be in this atmosphere with those your love and become a memory you will recall always. Who knows maybe it could even become a holiday tradition?

Crystal Bridges Offers Chic Contemporary Experience with ambiance that strikes the right chord  for Modern Art Lovers. In fact there is a great balance of elements – natural, architectural, realism and modernism to experience inside and outside. But honestly, what I did not expect was the thoughtfully curated contemporary collection of both 20th and 21st century American Artists works.

So this Spanista Art Culture Rituals Story is devoted to a stimulating journey through one portion of the Crystal Bridges Museum founded by Alice Walton. I wanted to start with Modern Art to help expand our horizons. Often I find people have an issue understanding Modern Works. I studied it in College appreciating it from an intellectual perspective but not until I experienced life from many angles did I begin to see its depth of meaning – its emotional affect it what is important – it is how you feel when you look come into it circle of influence that matters. I now let each modern work speak to me emotionally – if I stand still for a moment to let it affect wash over me I find a message arrives from the Artist that is relevant to me. I discover its value and enjoyment comes with it.  Next time you are exposed to Modern Art give this style of viewing a try.

As a creative soul I often get a craving to view beautiful art – do you? Just being in its presence gives me positive energy and helps drive me move forward – it opens my mind and stimulates my imagination for what is possible. I think, if one creates something of such beauty from truth it has an enduring quality that can live on long into the future. If your thirst for something to feed your soul – visit an Art History Museum. Yes, you can do it FREE. For example, Wal-Mart offers a visit to Crystal Bridges Museum for FREE. Many museums even the MET in New York have free days. Check it out it wont’s cost you a penny to have hours of enrichment and can bring a new level of joy.

Crystal Bridges American Art Museum Heartfelt Gift Wows Spanista with the vision of the courageous women of  the Wal-Mart Family. Deep in the center of America is a small town that became famous as the birthplace of Sam Walton, his wife Helen and the Global Corporate juggernaut – Wal-Mart, Inc.

It is Bentonville, Arkansas. Deep in the scenic Ozark Hills Country. As this is the time of the year when we focus on GIVING from the heart, I cannot help but think what a wonderfully conceived gift Helen gave us especially in the heart of Arkansas’s humble hills where access to something of this grand nature does not exist. As mentioned in other posts – giving back takes on all types of formations. It really can take on the character of the individual giver and can be modest as a donation or something grand that leaves a legacy. What we admire is an example of giving inspires us to see what is possible with our lives?

The story goes as Sam and Helen Walton amassed fortunes for the family, Alice the youngest daughter and her Mother gave birth to a dream. A dream to collect and celebrate American Art and Artists but especially those of the heart of America who may not aspire for the fame and fortune as  those on the coast aspire to achieve. Helen passed in 20017 and Alice picked up the baton. Her vision for building Crystal Bridges Museum was well positioned as there is indeed a gap in such organizations and museums that focus solely on the country best and most talented across a wide breath of media and over time – from historical to contemporary.

After Alice’s, the youngest Walton’s took the vision forward collecting American Art since 2004 and after years of dedicated planning and work, a beautiful architectural structure rises form the earth unlike any other – organic to the environment, compelling.

I discovered it  opened while living in New York watching a ’60 Minutes’ news program and made note when I was back in Kansas City for Bob and I to drive 3 hours south during Autumns color to see it for ourselves. The New Yorker wrote a great article titled “Alice’s Wonderland” by Rebecca Mead online.

One of Spansita’s Self Care Rituals is to take time to feed the soul through beautiful art – art of all kinds to expand your view and understanding. Art takes you in and allows you to lose yourself in its beauty.

I want to share it with you. If you are traveling though the center of this country through Kansas City or St. Louis, it is worth a side track road trip to see this cultural gem for many reasons.

Over the next two days I will offer views that demonstrate the joy  of the experience as we take a day at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville and then on to a unique town further west called Eureka Springs with a rich history that is full of interesting stories.

Thank you Alice Walton – you have brought much cultural richness to all that visit Crystal Bridges American Art Museum. You are my hero for Spanista Giving Back Rituals.
