Dear Wellness Seekers,

Friday Wellness Tip: Create Wonderful Life Today, Why Wait for Christmas?

To experience the power of now – live in the present moment. The present moment is the most powerful moment of all. It is the only time I can breathe, connect with my body, and feel alive. It is when I am fully present that I can be self-aware and consciously choose how I will behave in nay situation. When my mind is distracted and jumps to concern myself with the future, I may experience fear or worry unnecessarily. Or I may build expectations that can not be realized or disappoint me. Or more troublesome still is that I may react to unexpected stimulus in a way that has a negative impact on the people I care about.

Spanista Friday Wellness Tip Exercise:

The idea is replace emotional fears or needs with mindfulness. Stop what ever you are doing and close your eyes with me. Let’s do this exercise together. Imagine a black board in your mind – ask your self what you are currently feeling and take chalk in hand. Print out the word or phrase. Study it for a moment. Then take na imaginary eraser and wipe it away.

Now print ‘It’s A Wonderful Life Now!’ on the board. Ask for divine inspiration to help visualize the many wonders in your life – list them. Now I breathe in, gently think of the word “in.” As I breathe out, I softly say to myself, “out.” I repeat this cycle for several minutes, and any mind disturbances dissolve.

My gentle breathing relaxes my inner dwelling. I am alive in my breath, I am at ease in my heart. I don’t need to go anywhere else to find peace. Quiet and calm, I experience the peaceful power of the present moment in my body.

At the center of my being is an all-–knowing guide. The divine source with in us contains the ideas and answers I need to create a wonderful life. You actually already have it but are not fully aware of what it is. The job for each of us is to design that life and call on the wisdom of divine guidance to create it in the physical world in this very moment. I do not have to wait for the joys of Christmas – I can live them right now.

With Ritualistic practice of a Spanista, I cherish my capacity to receive inspiration from Spirit, to create and use the power of my thoughts, words, and actions to manifest my good in the world.

After all, why wait until Christmas when you can have that feeling in the current moment.

We deserve to have A Wonderful Life Now!

“It’s A Wonderful Life” is a Turner Classic Movie favorite that runs often this time of year. Or you can get the DVD on Amazon.com. It features Jimmy Stewart,  that holds so many heartfelt lessons about life. It is life itself that is what is the most precious gift of all and what we do with it matters very much to those who cross our paths. Live joyfully in the moment and you will have a positive effect on so many.

May Your Self Care Journey To Joy Be Merry & Bright,

Ginny

Spanista-Holiday-Collection-Gift #12:-Beads-Sacred-Symbolism.jpegPINIMAGE

Dear Wellness Seekers,

Spanista Holiday Collection Gift #11: Beads Sacred Symbolism Yesterday & Today.

We seem to be naturally attracted to beads – especially beaded bracelets. They beg to be touched and admire. My first recollection of beads comes from sitting on my Mother’s lap while she prayed the rosary. She was a devoted Catholic who always demonstrated a special reverence for prayer. Saying the rosary was a ritual she found great peace in. I do not recall a week going by when I did not witness here setting time aside to touch each bead in prayer in her favorite way. What I also recall, she always seemed to emerge from her form of reflection time with a renewed spirit – more content  and more loving. Perhaps this is one way the significance of rituals was imbedded in me at a young age.  And why beads hold such an attraction for me.

Mindy, owner of Design In The City Boutique agrees that a beaded bracelet provides personal comfort just by touching the beads. Of course who does not love their Spa Chic Style. The quality of the beaded bracelets pictured in an array of rich colors begs them to be collected and worn in a ‘statement’ layering effect. Spanista Enthusiasts know my penchant for bracelets. The day I have a Spa Studio treatment scheduled, I comb through my collection to ware one or more depending upon The Intention I have going into my Self Care time. When in the experience, I often touch the beads to bring me back to the moment when my mind wonders or when I want to be reminded of my intentions. It is a wonderful touchstone by which to can attach your own symbolism.

This holiday seasons, my curiosity peaked as to when and how beads became associated with symbolism, so I did some exploring. I discovered this fascinating explanation that appears to be well researched on ASacredMemory.com. Here is an excerpt of 3 questions and answers:

“What does history reveal about ancient sacred beads?”

“In his book, The Dawn of The Human Culture, archeologist Randall White of New York University, who specializes in the study of upper-Paleolithic art (earth embedded), believes that beads, perforated shells, pierced animal teeth, and other ornaments were remarkably symbolic and sacred to the ancients. White’s research indicated over 30,000 years ago the intricacy of beads required extraordinary time and effort, implying notable profound symbolic meaning. White’s experiments illustrate a single bead typically required one to three hours to craft.”

“What significance and/or purpose did the ancient beads symbolize?”

A handful of fragile ostrich eggshell beads was excavated from a Kenyan site called Enkapune Ya Mato, or Twilight Cave, established 40,000 years ago. Sediment found in the cave reveals a record of important cultural changes during the past few thousand years. According to writer Mitchell Leslie, “…they appeared to be the earliest known jewelry. But some anthropologists think they are much more. The people of the Twilight Cave may have exchanged them as ritual gifts or tokens making the Cheerio-like object the oldest known example of symbolism. …” (Mitchell, July-Aug. 2002)

Of particular interest is the commonality and widespread application of beads as symbols across many different cultures due to the inherent value the symbol(s) provide.

For example – In addition to helping keep one’s place in structured prayers, prayer beads also symbolize the commitment to spiritual life. With their circular form, a string represents the interconnectedness of all who pray. Each bead counted is an individual prayer or mantra, and the rote repetition of prayers and mantras is meant to facilitate a sole focus on the prayer or mantra itself. … [Maggie Oman Shannon and Eleanor, Wiley in A String and a Prayer]   Based on Shannon and Wiley’s observations, it’s of little surprise that the use of prayer beads— or similar customs involving symbols—in also evident in non-Christian practices across a far-reaching cultural, religious, and spiritual spectrum: the ancient Egyptians used beads, as did Native Americans,African history points to rituals evoking the power of gods; Hindus used prayer beads for counting breaths and repeating mantras; Buddhist bead practices served to attain enlightenment; and even within Judaism—long considering “prayer beads” as a form of paganism—a prayer shawl, known as a tallit, features craftsmanship that is based on a number of specified knots, quite similar to prayer beads.

“Did the ancients project “intention” onto these sacred beads?”

In her Book of Intentions, Dianne Martin writes about ‘intention.’ Our whole world changes with intention. The collision and interactions of intentions profoundly affects our behavior, our environment, our communities, our world, the universe, and therefore ourselves. Did the ancients know this?

A Beliefnet interview with Dr.Wayne Dyer, ( one of my heros) discussing his book The Power of Intention, features a significant quote by Carlos Castendada: “There’s an immeasurable indescribable force, which shamans called ‘intent’ and absolutely everything that exists in the entire cosmos is connected to it… an invisible source that ‘intends’ everything into the universe.”

Discovering how our ancestors around the world gave purpose and meaning to their beads helps provide remarkable insights into many of our present-day religious and spiritual customs, be they ceremonial, spiritual, in celebration, as currency, as part of healing rituals, as a form of status (power and wealth). Yet it is within the act of prayer itself that we can most recognize the symbolic and far-reaching significance of beads.”

Thank you to ASaredMemory.com for this history. This is a great site to spend time with if you care to learn more. Books are available on Amazon.com.

Spanista Takeaway: So know that when you are gifting a yourself or someone you care about a beaded bracelet you are giving more than Spa Chic Style, you are giving the Symbolism of the Spirit of Intention. That is a pretty potent gift. That is why it is added as #11 on the Spanista Holiday Collection Gift List.

May Your Self Care Journey To Joy be Merry & Bright,

Want-Fun?-Have-You-Attended-Tuba-Christmas-Concert?.jpegPINIMAGE

Dear Wellness Seekers,

Want Fun? Ever Attended Tuba Christmas Concert?  My lovely hubby and were invited to our first Tuba Christmas Concert here is Kansas City. Honestly I had no way of knowing what to expect. But is was being held at the celebrated new Kauffman CenterKansas City Performing Arts Center designed by Architect, Moshe Safdie, an award winning modernist. He designed interesting buildings in Singapore, India and Canada. I have yet to experience it but heard it was grand. So there was added incentive to attend.

Here is the back story. As a Spanista believes, the importance of nurturing loving relationships is essential to lasting happiness. The ‘how’ you do it through shared experiences is as important as the ‘what’ you do.  You know the feeling when a rush of warmth fills you up from the inside out. These are treasured moments that life long memories are built on.

So with this context, today’s story is about a young man in my life who is very dear to me. Before he could walk our time together focused of reading books. We would snuggle together and I would read. He so enjoyed it, we often read the same book over and over again. Eventually he could turn the pages just at the right time.  No sooner would I walk in the door then he would run to what was now a basket full of books and pull out his favorites, settle himself on the sofa and pat the seat next to him. That was his way of beckoning me to take my place and perform. Once he began walking we layered on music. From his Mother’s kitchen he selected pots and pans and wooden spoons to beat as drums to march to his own tune based on a story line for one of the books his imagination fully engaged. And funny thing was, when he did start to talk, he would form full sentences. Not just a word a two but a full thought.  To me this is just one small testament to the power of reading and music in a young child’s life. Together we built a ritual of joy and memories.

Fast Forward to today. Garrison is now 15 years old – a teenager with all the makings of a lad his age with one exception he is a gifted musician and plays multiple instruments – it all comes easily to him – drums (surprised)  and brass especially. He is now touching 6 feet tall – inching over that of his father. He likes to take the road less traveled so when his high school band needed a tuba player he stepped up tot he music plate. And he is having a great time at it.

Now this journey takes us to my first Tuba Christmas. Garrison now performs with Missouri’s top tuba players. They all travel to Kansas City for what has become a big annual event. The first Tuba Christmas was in New York’s Rockefeller Center in December 1974 by Harvey Phillips (coincidentally born in Aurora, Missouri) in tribute to his music teacher William J. Bell born on Christmas Day 1902 as a tribute to music teachers who inspire young people to take up music. Mr. Phillips was distinguished Professor, performer and entrepreneur. His vision for Tuba Christmas took fire and continues to grown as a holiday tradition throughout America. It is a special blend of students as young as 10, music teachers, the best local musicians who play professionally and those who continue on into their eighties. The holiday carols they play have a unique soulful quality – soothing really and quite lovely. Go to Tuba Christmas KC at kcsymphony.org

The kitschy thing they do is decorate themselves and there tuba’s as creatively as they like – it makes for a fun, relaxed and joyful concert experience. This style of unique music lifts the spirits high into the heavens.

The Kauffman Performing Arts Center is the perfect venue. It has a warm and intimate atmosphere where the music resonates beautifully.  If you have a chance to attend one in any city – please do. Traditions like this set the tone for a positive holiday all around or do something a bit offbeat and memorable. It will build unexpected memories together.

Garrison loved having my hubby and I in the audience. Nothing like being there to watch him and his peers shine like diamonds in the sky. So proud of him.

Ginny

Good-News-Monday:-Abundance.jpegPINIMAGE

Dear Wellness Seekers,

Good News Monday: Abundance Reaches Needy Globally, lifts my wellbeing factor. Why? Because it is a by-product of the pursuit of abundance. The global effect of a positive economy is helping people out of poverty. Now that is good news that needs to be shared. This brings us happiness if we see it through the right lens.

Pictured here is an insightful opinion article written by Arthur C. Brooks in the NY Times Sunday Review Section titled “Abundance Without Attachment”. It explores the age-old issue around the level of commercialism of the holiday’s – in particular Christmas with its custom of gift giving which entails materialist focus on having it all. Happily he shares its silver lining.

For Wellness Seekers, the 3 lessons Mr. Brooks shares from his visit with a Swami offers valuable thinking for viewing Abundance through a lens of living a happy life. At this time of year especially, Wellness Seekers hunger for Peace of Heart that can prove illusive with the many distractions the season can render – much of it focuses of shopping and indulging and spending. We may stop to wonder as we hand over the credit card yet another time, is this what it is really all about?

Mr. Brooks explores the conundrum – Is seeking economic prosperity and abundance a worthy pursuit or not in life to be happy?  To answer this question, he travels to India and seeks the wisdom of a highly regarded Swami. Much to his surprise he discovers that Abundance can have a positive effect on an individual level as long as we do not attach ourselves to materialism so it becomes the center of our lives. The Swami points out Abundance can be a good thing. For example, when positive economic influence extends globally  – reaching many remotes parts of the world as technology has connected us for the better, the proportion of people in the world living on less than $1 a day or less has shrunk by 80% in our lifetime. Of course this is good news!

When you have a moment, read the article and reflect on it via this link: NY Times Sunday Review Section, titled “Abundance Without Attachment”, by Arthur C. Brooks. The 3 lessons you will learn maybe worth the time to help you live a happier life now and in all of 2015. Would love to hear your thoughts too.

Spanista Takeaway: Abundance – Spanista believes there is more than enough for everyone – spirit offers an endless source. Abundance is about more than financial wellbeing – it is about how we view other important aspects of life too – Are we rich in relationships, rich in our appreciation of arts and the world, rich in understanding our talents and  rich in sharing what we have with others? Abundance is to be generous of spirit and forgiving cherishing peace and goodness.

As we move thought the final days of the season – remember, the good news is Abundance has the ability to raise the wellbeing of others. And we did not have to go to India to discover it thanks to Mr. Brooks.

May Your Self Care Journey To Joy Be Merry & Bright,

Ginny
