Dear Wellness Seekers,Do Friends at Work Matter? This Opinion Article ‘Friends at Work? Not So Much’, featured in the NYTimes Sunday Review by Adam Grant a professor at University of Pennsylvania and a Martin Prosperity Institute fellow reveals this latest insight.
His article explores the shifting landscape of relationships in today’s modern office environment. Adam Grant offers, “Once, work was a major source of friendships. We took our families to company picnics and invited our colleagues over for dinner. Now work is a more transactional place. We go to the office to be efficient, not to form bonds. We have plenty of productive conversations, but fewer meaningful relationships.”
He reports in 1985, about half of Americans said they had a close friend at work; by 2004, this was true for only 30%. But he does not offer any more current data. Frankly, Spanista projects today it is under 20%. It appears we feel it is less important to work where you can make friends so the theme is “We are increasingly working alone” per Jeffrey Pfeiffer, a professor at Stanford.
Spanista wonders how sad is this? The reasons for this shift are predictable like flex time for workers, dominating impact of social media and now each job is seen as a stepping stone to the next, therefore why invest time in creating personal connections? This triggers thoughts of my career time working for a very large global marketing firm on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. I cannot help recalling the big push to move away from private office spaces and cubes to an ‘open bull pen’ concept. The logic was this would breakdown the silos. And it would increase bonding and interaction thereby increasing teamwork.
I see this concept in many offices I visit today, including my prior employer’s. Funny thing is, I observe so many workers sitting face to face with earbuds in to block out the person next to them. My wonder is, why would this office design trend not lead to the bonding it was purported to deliver? But its appears open seating may have the opposite effect? Is it taking away the natural curiosity about co-workers because now almost every habit of your colleagues is out in the open! Where is the mystery in finding about others?
Do Friends at Work Matter? Spanista encourages Wellness Seekers to see the bigger picture of relationships at the office. There are two major benefits to investing time in relationship building at the office that should not be ignored:
1. It has been proven in many studies that when you cultivate a deep friendship at work – you are indeed happier with you work and your life overall. This alone would prove to be worth the effort as a means of proactive Self Care.
2. Over a career life time, the office inspired relationships you sustain can be the richest of relationships. And they can become the lifeblood of your network support system. One of the biggest benefits of building key relationships is connecting deeply with all kinds of people. They can offer the feeling of continuity in a protracted world. And you can turn to them when you need perspective or support. Believe me, everyone needs this now and then. Even more rewarding is you can be there for them when they need you. It is worth investing time into a couple of valued relationships at each company you work with that you take with you once you leave. If you are shortsighted in this critical human dynamic you will indeed find yourself one day ‘working alone’. Give it some reflection time.
What is your opinion on this?

Friday Wellness Tip: Focus on Quality Experiences is Spanista’s suggestion to take the opportunity over Labor Day Weekend to re-evaluate how our time is being spent, with whom and why. For many the start of the school year can offer a new list of expectations that change everything. For example, personal calendars are full of new activities that spin around the kids, your work life is kicking into high gear for the second half of the year and summer has left you with residual commitments.
Spanista feels now is the time to step back and assess the situation. Be proactive to be assured that you stage your new routine without sacrificing your needs and joy. First take some quiet time – one hour will do. Find a serene place like a public garden or park. My favorite is Kauffman Memorial Garden that is pictured here. This Orchid House is quite and cool and triggers reflection mode immediately upon entering it. Find a spot where you will not be distracted to draw a four box grid to complete this exercise:
1. Left Top Box: Where is you time going now with summer tasks, new expectations for family and work now.
2. Left Bottom Box: Your needs now and requirements to feel joy. Prioritize them to identify the top three.
3. Bottom Right Box: Re stage your life based upon quality of life experiences as they align best with priorities in Left Bottom Box.
4. Top Right Box: Now RE-STAGE YOUR LIFE based upon what you have discovered through your exercise based the fact that you do not want to feel like a victim of circumstances after 6 months but clearly happy about how you have managed your Self Care successfully while focusing on the quality of experiences you have honored with others. Sort out the quality of other tasks with your family. Some are not necessary at all. They are just time fillers. Teach your kinds how valuable you are – your time and it will teach them loads in return.
True joy lies not in the quantity but in the quality of life experiences. Engaging in too many activities—even fun activities—may leave you feeling drained. Self-Care is deeply nourished yourself by doing a few things with great love and attention.
For Spanista, I begin my day in thoughtful discernment, setting aside, without guilt, any nonessential tasks. By focusing on what really matters I make more heartfelt connections with others. I notice the beauty of my surroundings. I savor my meals. Rather than rushing through an endless list of activities, I focus on each moment of my precious existence. Friday Wellness Tip: Focus on Quality Experiences is about focusing on proactively managing your Self Care. Focusing on the quality of life’s experiences becomes a habit as you consciously practice doing less and paying more attention. I am aware of the beauty of life in every moment of the day, leaving loads of unneccessary stress behind. It really works! Let me know what happens if you give it a try! Love to hear your story. To Your Self Care Journey to Joy, Ginny Dear Wellness Seekers,Delightful Artisan Birdhouses For Nature’s Feathered Friends is a story I had to share with you. Recently on a Spanista Reflection Walk was touring a garden in Kansas City with my two lovely sisters-in-law who were visiting. I love them both – we are so different but really are like sisters. We were all drawn to these incredible nests – created with the eye of a gifted artist and handcrafted with tenderness.
At this time of year it conjures up thoughts about the passing of summer – how quickly it goes. Nests are eagerly built-in spring by our feather friends. They instinctively are driven to procreate so they carry on their species. The beautiful eggs are laid, then nurtured until the babies come into the world to be lovingly protected until the day they are ready to fly by summers end. They soar with joy are they were meant to do. No grown to venture off and start their own independent lives. It is a metaphor for the shortness of life – May to September. Thought it would be fun to take a moment to reflect with the beauty of poetry. The Miracle Of FlightI watched in awe the laboring tenants of the birdhouse I'd made, And for their family devotion, they (and I) have been amply repaid! Mr. and Mrs. Wren became the proud parents of a couple of eggs, And unto them were born two chicks with big mouths and wobbly legs! The pair began building their cozy abode along about the first of May. I watched from my patio as they stashed bits of grasses, feathers and hay! They'd rest now and then 'tweeting' each other on the porch of their dwelling, And not unlike we uncouth mortals, I sensed a bit of familial yelling! Bye and bye, my ears heard two little birdies faintly a-cheeping, And from the entryway I saw two little bobble heads shyly peeping! Their wide-open mouths kept Mr. and Mrs Wren flying to and fro, To fill cavernous craws with who knows what to help them to grow! Then one bright morn I was privileged to see a wonder of God's Creation! One little fellow emerged from the nest and paused with some hesitation. Then, into the rising sun it flew from its perch - what a beautiful sight! My soul was filled with elation - I had just witnessed the miracle of flight!
